Sampling For Fun

Last week, B10 and CW watched a show on the Food Network about holiday foods. One of the foods they featured was flavored popcorn, the kind you buy in tins at the mall.

B10 had never heard of such a thing - and very much wanted to try this new food.

I found a great company online (Pendelton Popcorn Factory), that sold small bags of different flavors for only $3.50 each. That way, each Caterpillar could choose the flavor they wanted to try.

The box arrived today, with our four sample flavors inside. We had chosen Confetti, Toasted Marshmallow, Sweet Corn and Chocolate. Tonight we took a few minutes to sit around together and sample each flavor.

We tasted each flavor of the Confetti (it's a mix of fruits) first. B10 hit the nail on the head when he said it smelled just like Fruiti Pebbles. I can't say any of us loved this one, especially not the Grape flavor - it tasted exactly like Dimeatap medicine (ack!).

Next came Toasted Marshmallow, which the Caterpillars LOVED. In fact, it was their favorite when we tallied the votes in the end.

After that was the Chocolate. Oddly, no one really enjoyed this flavor. It was rather heavy and not that good.

Finally, we tried the Sweet Corn. This was my choice when we ordered and was both mine and Hubby's favorite. The Caterpillars liked it, but asked for more Toasted Marshmallow!

Overall, we had less than a handful of popcorn each, but it was so cool to have seen something on TV, then ordered it online and then actually being able to taste what they tasted on TV. We learned about butterfly versus mushroom popcorn (everything we had tonight was of the mushroom variety).

We also learned how they add the flavoring to popcorn and observed it on the popcorn we ate tonight. It was really a teaching moment where a common holiday snack became so much more! I can't wait to try this with some other food items we've seen on the Food Network.

yummo! I like fruity pebbles, but the sweet corn does sound yummy. That was a neat idea:)
